HAWAII CRAFTSMEN MOVES OFFICE AND STORAGE SPACE, MANY MAHALOS TO ...

John Friend (Hawaii Craftsmen office manager) for moving the office to it’s new location at ROC Office Centers, 1110 Nuuanu Avenue, Rm #21

On Tues. Nov. 22, Sidney Lynch, Terry Savage, Barbara Thompson and  Liz Train organized all the 50+ boxes in the basement storage area.

On Sat. Nov. 26, 17 people,  Shelle Avecilla, Francisco Clemente, Tom Gibson,  Daven Hee, Philip Kwock, Jackie Mild Lau, Burt Lum, Rochelle Lum, Sidney Lynch, Faye Maeshiro, Geri Maeshiro, Suzanne Marinelli, Drew Matsumoto, Yukio Ozaki, Terry Savage, Laurie Siegfried, Mike Shigeta, and Mark White helped to move all the stuff from the basement to the new storage space in the Blaisdell Hotel on Fort Street Mall. Many hands made light work and we were done in 2.5 hours leaving the basement storage area with clean shelves and floor. Also thanks to Bunky Bakutis and Barbara Thompson for taking the raku glazes and trash cans that would otherwise have needed to be discarded. Special mahalo to Drew Matsumoto for getting his company truck so we had to make only one trip. And thanks to Allison Roscoe for sharing her studio space at Blaisdell Hotel with us.

FAREWELL TO MARK WHITE, FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

At the end of October, the Board of Directors bade a heavy-hearted farewell to Mark White, who stepped down as President of the Board of Directors to pursue his new role as Hawaii State Director for the Convention of States Project. The Board of Directors would like to express our most sincere gratitude to Mark, who has been a great leader, mentor, friend, and most importantly, a levelheaded sounding board to its members. He has been the backbone of the organization, which under his leadership has thrived in all measures. Most recently, he ushered in the organization’s 50th anniversary year with new programs and initiatives, including the Strategic Partnership Program, helping us build stronger ties with other local arts organizations; free professionalization workshops for members; special programs with world-class artists; a year-long evaluation initiative improving our services to members and the arts community at large; professional photography of our award recipients and installations for use in publications and social media; working with communications and public relations experts to promote our programs; and a new visual brand and 50th anniversary logo to be used throughout the year of celebrations. Mark has helped us immensely in realizing our anniversary plans and in developing strategies that will influence the shape of the next 50 years of fine crafts in Hawaii.

Mark has left a very large set of shoes to fill. Therefore, the board invites its membership to recommend and nominate potential successors for the position of President of the Board of Directors. The President is the principle executive officer of the organization; presides at all meetings of the members and of the Board of Directors; is primary signatory to contracts and documents; and, in general, supervises the activities and operations of Hawaiʻi Craftsmen. This position requires excellent leadership, organizational and people skills, and a strong understanding of fine crafts. Please send your recommendations/nominations (self-nominations acceptable) and brief biographical information of potential candidates to Barbara Thompson, Acting President and Vice President, at barbarathompson@hawaiicraftsmen.org. Mahalo for your participation in helping the board achieve its goal of finding a suitable candidate.

Her work examines the human condition through her mixed media studio practice, which includes working with metal, beeswax, fur, textile, wood, silicone, human hair, and animal remnants.

ANNIVERSARY STICKERS

As part of our 50th Anniversary initiatives, Hawaiʻi Craftsmen will be offering member artists the opportunity to celebrate with us by labeling their art works on display in galleries, museum and institutions throughout the islands (and nationwide) with a white and gold anniversary sticker. Stickers will be available as of January 1, 2017 and can be requested from the Hawaiʻi Craftsmen office,info@hawaiicraftsmen.org, at least 2 weeks before art works go on display.  We ask that member artists discuss using these wall and pedestal stickers with exhibition organizers prior to requesting stickers from Hawaiʻi Craftsmen.

COME SEE OUR NEW HOME !

After 14 years of partnership with the Arts@Marks Garage, it is with bittersweet sentiments that Hawaiʻi Craftsmen is relocating our office to ROC (Real Office Center) at 1110 Nuʻuanu Ave. We wish the Arts@Marks Garage all the best with their exciting renovations plans and look forward to fresh avenues of creative collaborations in years to come. With our move to ROC, we are joining an innovative co-working office environment with membership groups including emerging innovators, entrepreneurs, and the creative community, with whom we hope to collaborate in exciting new ways. To celebrate our move, meet our new ROC member community, and share in a toast to the holiday season, we cordially invite Hawaiʻi Craftsmen members and friends to a potluck gathering on Sunday, December 18, 2016 from 4-6 pm at the ROC (upstairs lanai), 1110 Nuʻuanu Ave., Honolulu, HI 96817.

49th ANNUAL STATEWIDE JURIED EXHIBITION CLOSING SUMMARY

Now that the 49th Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition (ASJE) has closed, it is time to reflect upon the successes of the exhibition. Of the 109 applicants who registered 284 entries on CaFE, this year’s juror, Cindi Strauss, selected 98 entries by 75 artists. The selected works represent some of finest crafts seen on the Big Island, Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and Oʻahu, and were beautifully complemented by 13 exquisite works by invited artists, Daven Hee (ceramics), Derek Bencomo (wood), and Sally and William Worcester (glass).

More than 1500 visitors attended the exhibition, many who praised the beauty, creativity and excellence of the art and display. Big congratulations go out to participating artists, Amber Aguirre, Boris Huang, Diane K.W., Robert York, Jon Rawlings, Elizabeth Kent, Bud Spindt, Gregory Paul, Bai Xin Chen, Michelle Schwengel-Regala, John Margenau, John Mydock and Isla Harmon, and Lee Plevney, who received awards for their entries. As a testament to the high quality of the juried selections, the Honolulu Museum of Art and State Foundation for Culture and the Arts are currently considering the acquisition of artworks by Amber Aguirre, Marianne Lowry, Juvana Soliven, Daven Hee, Kenny Kicklighter, and Michael Lowry. Additionally, 7 artworks were sold to private collectors.

As I get ready to close the books on ASJE 2016, I would like to remind member artists that it is never too early to start working on next year’s submissions! ASJE 2017, currently scheduled to open to the public toward the end of October through mid-November, will be a particularly important one, as it will be the 50th annual show held in the history of Hawaiʻi Craftsmen! So letʻs prepare to celebrate this important milestone with the finest that our islands have to offer!

Mahalo nui loa to the artists, volunteers, sponsors, and friends who made ASJE 2016 a great success!

MEMBER NEWS & EXHIBITS

Congratulations to Nadia Fairlamb, 2017 Clark Hulings Fund Fellow!

In September 2016, Nadia Fairlamb participated in the Hawaiʻi Craftsmen Professionalization Workshop, “CaFE as a Tool for Artists,” in which participants were trained in using CaFE to find and apply to nationwide artist opportunities (e.g. exhibitions, grant programs, and residencies). During the workshop, participants were instructed to search and find three nationwide artist opportunities listed on CaFE and encouraged to apply to at least one of these listings in the following weeks. Nadia submitted an application to the Clark Hulings Fund for Visual Arts’s Business Accelerator Program (clarkhulingsfund.org/accelerator/), a grant and business training program for visual artists. Nadia was subsequently selected as one of only 20 Fellows nationwide for this prestigious 1-2 year fully funded program. Congratulations Nadia! We look forward to hearing about your CHF Fellowship and experience. To read more about Nadiaʻs art business, please visit her website at www.themermaidsmirror.com

HAWAIʻI CRAFTSMEN 50TH ANNIVERSARY STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

Aloha,

Help us celebrate Hawaiʻi Craftsmen’s 50th Anniversary Year. In an effort to support an increased presence of fine craft programs during the year we are seeking partnerships with other art and fine craft organizations and community art centers, groups, and galleries. We hope that you will see the mutual benefits of these Strategic Partnerships. Ideally we can begin an on-going working relationship to mutually support and promote Hawaii’s fine craft artists working primarily in functional and non-functional 2- and 3 dimensional art in clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, stone, and mixed media.

We are accepting proposals for exhibits, art events, awards, and workshops.

Our over-arching goal is to celebrate and promote public art exhibitions, art displays, and events featuring fine craft arts and artists and to support artists working in clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, stone, and mixed media through formal and informal workshops and educational opportunities.

We consider this a wonderful way to celebrate 50 years of fine crafts in Hawaiʻi and we look forward to receiving an application from you at least 3 months in advance of your planned project. We are hopeful that together we can increase the appreciation and support of fine craft art throughout the state and beyond!

CONGRATULATIONS TO HAWAII ISLAND ARTS ALLIANCE, HAWAII POTTERS GUILD, UH ART GALLERY-UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA, CURRENT RECIPIENTS OF STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM AWARDS.

“Your involvement is vital to continue to make Hawai'i Craftsmen a success.”

DONATE

Through the generous support of government, private foundations and individual donors, Hawai‘i Craftsmen has been able to continue to provide our community with successful programs. However, grants vary considerably from year to year and have recently been reduced significantly. Grants do not cover growing administrative costs such as rent, insurance and accounting expense or replacing aging office equipment such as computers and printers.

Your involvement is vital to continue to make Hawai'i Craftsmen a success. We are increasingly dependent on individual contributions to improve member services and to cover basic office operations. Your contribution to Hawai‘i Craftsmen, in any amount, is critical to our future and tangibly recognizes the value of our programs. We welcome all contributions and suggestions for guaranteeing our future financial sustainability and more years of serving the Hawai'i art community.

Mahalo for your support!
