May Izumi was born and raised in Honolulu. She earned her undergraduate degree in marketing at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and her MBA at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. She currently works as a science editor. She studied art at the University of Hawaii and also took classes at the YWCA, the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and the Hawaii Potters’ Guild.

Her work can be found in the collection of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, The Contemporary Museum, and private collections in Japan, New Zealand, Hawaii, Europe, and the U.S. mainland.

I often tell people that my work is about stories. I was a serious bookworm and elements from those stories often creep into my work. Now, after making art for a few years, I think my work is more about things that happen on the periphery of the plot or once the tale is over.

Many times, when I reach the “happily ever after” ending, questions start popping into my mind. Usually they come well after the book is closed and I’ve moved on to something else. To most people they are probably silly questions—things no one would normally care about. I don’t know what it says about me but I can’t help thinking about them.

For example, if you’re the evil stepsister in the story, and you manage to survive until the end, what do you do once the heroine is married to her prince? If someone steals all the stars out of the sky how do you go about putting them back? What would you be willing to do to take back your heart’s desire?

These thoughts crowd in my head until I make a piece—sometimes to answer the question and sometimes just to see what the question looks like.
