Hawai‘i Craftsmen celebrates its annual
Fire–Earth–Water Event:
Raku Ho'olaule'a
April 27, 2009 HONOLULU, HI;
Since 1978, Hawai'i Craftsmen annually presents
Raku Ho'olaule'a,
a fusion of East/West culture through ceramics. Raku is a 400 year old Japanese style
of pottery which has influenced contemporary ceramics around the world.
Nationally known artist David Kuraoka who divides his time between teaching
ceramics at San Francisco State University and spending time at his island home on
Kauai will be our guest artist for this year’s
Raku Ho'olaule'a.
He will provide a slide lecture, wet clay demonstration, and partake in the
camaraderie of ceramicists firing raku at beautiful Waimanalo Bay Beach Park in the
shadows of the Ko‘olau mountains. He will also jury the contemporary category of
ceramics fired at the beach for our
Raku Ho'olaule'a
Exhibition held at The ARTS at
Marks Garage.
Each year, Hawai'i Craftsmen partners with The Urasenke Foundation of Hawai‘i to
present the Japanese Zen Tea Ceremony demonstrations to the public. A Foundation
representative will jury the work in the traditional category for our
Raku Ho'olaule'a
Exhibition .
