Opening Reception: Friday, October 8, 2010
Exhibition: October 9-31, 2010
Honolulu Academy Art Center at Linekona
Our Juror is Robert T. Soppelsa
Senior Curator for the U.S. Department of State's
ART in Embassies Program.
We're honored to bring Mr. Soppelsa from Washington D.C. to Hawai`i.
Mr. Soppelsa will present a free, open to the public lecture at each jury location titled: "Craft Art and Diplomacy: a Discussion"
The artificial division between Fine Arts and Applied Arts has come under criticism in recent art critical scholarship. This presentation will address the issues: are these distinctions: art, vs. craft; fine art, vs. not-so-fine art; useful, vs. useless art, valid? And how does this situation play into the representation of America's arts in diplomatic settings in places where these distinctions are definitely not recognized.
