Attend an authentic Japanese tea ceremony demonstration conducted by Ms. Akiko Ono, Kyoju (Professor) of the Urasenke School and a member of the Urasenke Hawaiʻi Association. After the ceremony, master ceramic artist Yukio Ozaki will teach you how to make your own tea bowl. Clay, tools and bisque firing will be provided.

Don and Randy are two of the most respected and entertaining ceramics instructors working today. Don Ellis
Currently a professor and a Fine Arts Department Chair at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico and has been a Ceramics educator since 1986. He is known as a master of Alternative Firing techniques and copper matte glazes and has spent over 30 years mastering these special techniques. His work is featured in Alternative Kilns and Firing Techniques and Mastering Raku.
Randy Brodnax
Randy is a life-long potter and educator from Texas and Louisiana. He creates functional pottery, large decorative vessels, and clay sculpture. His creations are images of nature, animals, and fish, and he is a master on the potter’s wheel. A Louisiana native, Randy has retained much of the Cajun joie de vivre with which he was raised and incorporates that into his entertaining and informative demonstrations which are not to be missed.

Raku Hoʻolauleʻa is focused around a weekend of communing, glazing and firing ceramic artworks by the beach at Camp Mokulēʻia. Participants are organized in groups, each with their own kilns, equipment and glazes. Jurying of artwork for the exhibition will take place at the beach on Sunday morning prior to striking camp. Participating artists must register in advance with Hawaiʻi Craftsmen, and the public is invited to visit and watch the firings all weekend.

During the The HEART of Honolulu Street Festival in Chinatown, the public is invited to get “hands on” with raku in this family friendly activity! Participants get to glaze ceramic tea bowls under the direction of Hawai’i Craftsmen members, see them fired using the raku process, and take their finished tea bowls home that day.

$15 per bowl, includes blank tea bowl, glaze, and raku firing.No reservation required, but supplies are limited, so come early!
Artworks selected by the jurors at the campout will be on display in an exhibition at The Arts at Marks Garage for the month of May.
