Raku Ho'olaule'a 2026

About Raku Ho'olaule'a

Founded in 1977, Raku Hoʻolauleʻa (a celebration of raku) brings together ceramic artists to participate in raku and related firing techniques at a campout which is held in a beautiful beach setting on the North Shore of Oʻahu. Objects glazed and fired at the beach are juried by experts in contemporary and traditional raku for an exhibition.

Additional events include a community kiln where the public can glaze tea bowls and watch them being fired.

Guest Artists

KATE & WILL JACOBSON

Kate and Will Jacobson have been collaborating as artists for forty-six years, and are widely recognized as the originators of Naked Raku, a firing technique that reveals the unadorned, earthy beauty of clay. They also pioneered Mica Infusion, a process using colored mica and terra sigillata to achieve a shimmering, lustrous surface. Their work has been exhibited internationally, has earned numerous awards, and is included in many corporate, private, and public collections.

Their current work is inspired by life at the heart of the Pacific Rim. Hawaiʻi, with its trembling blue horizons, slow-moving rivers of lava, and star-filled skies, offers a vivid and elemental backdrop. This environment fosters a continual awareness of the fierce power and tender fragility of life. Their art offers a glimpse into a world filled with wonder and awe. As climate change increasingly threatens island cultures, their work aims to raise awareness while celebrating the beauty and strength of the ocean that surrounds, sustains, and connects us all.

Visitors are asked to check in at the office and pay a $13 day use fee.

Registration

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN

Please read through these rules and liability waiver before registering (link at the bottom of this section)

All participants MUST be registered in advance through Hawaiʻi Craftsmen. This is because Camp Mokulē‘ia charges us per person attending.

For example: If you bring along your spouse or a friend, and they are not planning on firing/exhibiting, they would still need to be added to your registration as Camping Only ($45/person). If you bring along anyone who is 17 or younger, they would need to be added to your registration as Young Artists ($25/each), and they can fire/exhibit.

Raku Hoʻolualeʻa is organized into firing groups, and each group brings their own equipment and supplies. If you already know the group you will be firing with, you can select that when you register. If you are not affiliated with an established group, we will contact you to choose an appropriate group. Individual groups may require additional fees for supplies and/or meals.

Registration includes all fees for camping. Additional lodging (Lodge rooms, tentalos, and group cabins) may be available through Camp Mokulēʻia. Contact them directly at tara@campmokuleia.org or by calling them at 808-637-6241.

CAMPOUT RULES

Everyone firing or camping MUST register in advance with Hawaiʻi Craftsmen. Non-registered day visitors must pay a fee of $13.00 to Camp Mokulē‘ia at the front office upon arrival.

Tea Bowls and Sake Cups:

We ask that each registered firing participant donate at least 4 bisque-fired tea bowls (for the Community Kiln) and 4 high fired sake cups (cone 5 or above, for the opening reception). This is a really important way for us to raise the funds to support this event, and we really, really appreciate your help.

We can accept these at the campout, or on load-in day for the exhibition (Sunday, March 30)

Assigned Camping and Firing Areas:

Each group will be assigned a camping area that is adjacent to their assigned firing area. Size and placement of areas is based on size of group. Every effort will be made to accommodate group requests. Kilns and pit fire containers must be elevated above the surface to minimize scorching the ground. Reduction barrels/cans must be elevated or placed on kiln shelving/bricks. All reduction material must be extinguished and disposed of in the dumpster.

Parking:

Overnight parking is available to registrants in designated parking areas only. Each driver must obtain a car registration form from your group leader and display it in the window of each vehicle. Outside overflow parking is available on the highway adjacent to the camp.

Loading and Unloading:

Unloading and loading will be allowed from the parking lot and through a gate at the far end of the grounds. Remember to bring carts and hand trucks for transporting gear.  NO vehicles will be allowed in the camping area during the event.

Rubbish:

Please be considerate of the rubbish we generate! Last year the dumpsters were a disaster area and a burden on our hosts. Please consider sorting/consolidating your rubbish, flattening boxes, and taking home what you can to recycle or repurpose.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE CAMP MOKULEIA TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

• Front Gate opens daily at 7:00 am, closes at 8:00 pm for registered participants.

• NO PETS allowed (except for registered service animals. ESA's are not considered registered service animals).

• No alcoholic beverages.

• No smoking.

• No loud noise after 10:00 pm.

• Do not build fires or cook on the grass.

• Keep fires away from trees and tents.

• No nails in trees.

• Dispose of wash (and glaze) water in sinks at rest rooms; do not dump in the sand or ocean.

• Take all trash and bulky trash items to the dumpster throughout the weekend.

EXHIBITION RULES

Artwork made and glazed by the entrant, and fired at the event are eligible for entry. Only registered firing participants may enter the juried competition. Each registered participant must complete an entry form and may enter a total of four pieces.

The installation committee will install all accepted artworks. Entries that pose an unusual installation challenge may be rejected or require the artist’s assistance. Artists with extremely delicate or unwieldy entries should make special arrangements for delivery, handling, and pick-up of their artwork.

Extreme care will be taken in handling all artwork; however, Hawai‘i Craftsmen and the exhibition venue assume no responsibility for loss or damage to artworks on display or in transit no matter how such damage may have been sustained. All accepted entries will be displayed at the owner’s risk.

Accepted entries must remain in the exhibition for the show’s duration and are subject to photographic reproduction for educational and publicity purposes. Artists are encouraged to offer their entries for sale, and Hawai‘i Craftsmen will retain a sales commission of 40%.

Oʻahu artists are required to sit one shift per accepted piece during the show, find a substitute, or pay a $30/shift sitter’s fee. Artists failing to show up for their designated shift must pay a $50 no show fee and a public shaming.
